The Story
Crisis Core takes place 7 years before the events of Final Fantasy VII- Advent Children.
The main protagonist is Zack Fair (Zax, in Japanese), a young and friendly 2nd Class SOLDIER who aspires to become a 1st Class and a hero. Though reckless and sometimes naive, he possesses the strenght to face any adversary head-on. During an assignement he discovers the internal affairs of Shinra and SOLDIER.
Zack
Shinra Electric Power Company acts as a "de facto" government after the discovery of mako energy which the Shinra used to fuel the planet. In addition to their monopoly over mako the company employed a large military (SOLDIER) to secure their control over much of the planet. However, the company collapsed following the Meteor Crisis (a meteor falls on the planet within an extraterrestrial lifeform - JENOVA) and now operates on a far smaller level, but still with a major role.
Some 1st Class SOLDIER as Angeal (Zack's mentor and friend), Genesis and Sephiroth (the worldwide known hero) were subdued to an experiment with implementation of JENOVA cells to increase their strenght and abilities in battle.
GENESIS
SEPHIROTH
While the Angeal and Genesis experiments were not quoted as a complete succes (Angeal remains good, but Genesis turns bad in the end)... Sephiroth proves to be the perfect hero until he discovers his true origins and starts to hate Shinra and, in time, everything. Feeling he is better than all the humans, Sephiroth decides to become a god to take control of the planet. Of course Zack and his new friend Cloud must stop him.
Cloud Strife(Karaudoo, in Japanese) appears in Crisis Core as a Shinra infantryman who becomes friend with Zack and dreams of joining the elite ranks of SOLDIER. Though Cloud it's just an infantryman at this point, a great destiny that he himself could not have imagined awaits him (Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children).
